Vessels approaching from the Pacific Ocean

Proceed with the requisite caution passing through the entrance to San Francisco Bay. Be advised that there is a channel separation zone in place for commercial shipping traffic, and that commercial traffic can be very heavy coming into the Port of Oakland.

Upon entering the Bay, continue East leaving Alcatraz Island to port, gradually turning ESE to pass beneath the Oakland Bay Bridge. Currents can be very strong so be sure to maintain a safe distance from the bridge towers. Passing under the bridge, bear E again towards the entrance of the Oakland-Alameda Estuary. There is a day marker off the NW corner of Alameda Island, while the enormous cranes of the Port of Oakland can be seen just to the north entrance of the channel. Encinal YC is located approximately 3 miles from the entrance to the Estuary, just past Jack London Square on the South side of the channel. The Estuary is quite deep (approximately 35-40 feet) and vessels can hug the South side of the channel to avoid container ships entering and exiting the port of Oakland if necessary. The Club's guest dock is located directly in front of the clubhouse.
